AI chatbots have gone from a novelty to something a lot of us use without thinking twice. Maybe you’ve asked one to help write a tricky email, plan a birthday party, or explain what a word means. They’re handy, they’re fast, and they’re only getting more common.
But here’s the thing worth slowing down for: when you type something into a chatbot, that information doesn’t just disappear. So before you share, it’s worth knowing what’s fine to hand over and what’s better kept to yourself.
First, how these tools actually work
When you chat with an AI, your messages usually travel to a company’s servers to get a response. Depending on the service and its settings, those conversations may be stored, reviewed by people to improve the system, or used to train future versions of the tool.
That doesn’t mean anyone is watching you specifically. It just means a chatbot isn’t a private diary. Treat it more like sending a message to a company than like whispering to a friend.
What’s perfectly fine to share
Most of what people use AI for is completely low-risk. Go right ahead with things like:
- General questions (“How do I get a grease stain out of a shirt?”)
- Help writing or editing something that isn’t sensitive
- Brainstorming ideas for a project, a trip, or a gift
- Explaining a topic you’re trying to understand
- Recipes, workout ideas, or planning your week
If you’d be comfortable saying it out loud in a grocery store line, it’s fine to type into a chatbot.
What to keep to yourself
Here’s where a little caution goes a long way. Avoid sharing:
- Passwords, PINs, and account logins. No legitimate tool needs these.
- Social Security numbers, bank account or card numbers. Never type these in.
- Your home address, phone number, or full birthdate, especially tied to other details.
- Medical information you’d rather keep private.
- Someone else’s personal information. If it’s not yours to share, keep it out.
A good rule of thumb: if losing control of a piece of information would cause you real trouble, don’t put it in a chatbot.
A few habits that keep you safer
- Check your settings. Many chatbots let you turn off chat history or opt out of having your conversations used for training. It’s usually a quick toggle.
- Don’t fully trust the answers. AI can sound confident and still be wrong. For anything that matters — health, money, legal questions — double-check with a real professional.
- Watch for imposters. Scammers now use AI to write convincing fake messages and even copy voices. If a “chatbot” or message asks for money or passwords, that’s a red flag every time.
- Keep kids in the loop. If your children use these tools for homework, remind them of the same rules: no personal details, and check the facts.
